Our Story

It was my brother-in-law's idea to start this blog. Jake, thanks for the push.

In May 2009, at 25 weeks pregnant, I was put on bed rest as a result of a growing cervical fibroid. It was a major bummer, to say the least. Want to know the complete story of that damned fibroid? Here ya go.

I started the blog to stave off boredom, mainly by writing reviews for books and bad TV. After the birth of little Scotty in August 2009, this turned into a mommy blog (the horror!).  I vented, extolled, and waxed poetic about the complicated role of Motherhood in today's society yet came up with zero conclusions. As our little Bear grew, I inexplicably stumbled into running - half, full and ultra marathons, mostly because it was cheaper than therapy.

While I still review books, this blog is the story of our lives, complete with a new pair of shoes every 250 miles.

Interesting Facts

--  After a stressful pregnancy but mostly-uncomplicated birth, Scotty became very, very, very ill on Day 7 of his young life. He was rushed via ambulance to the children's hospital in town. We learned he was extremely jaundiced and may have suffered permanent brain damage. Unbeknownst to us, JAUNDICE IS DANGEROUS. One pediatrician, two lactation consultants, and four office visits missed all of the warning signs, causing us to experience a degree of terror no parent should ever have to go through. After four days in the NICU, Scotty made a full recovery and is now a healthy, happy six year old. My message for new parents is always the same: JAUNDICE IS DANGEROUS. Feed that baby any way you can, since elimination of the bilirubin is the best way to treat it. Always take jaundice seriously.

-- I was a Marriage and Family Therapist before bed rest. I had my own little practice with a couch and a file cabinet and everything. It felt very official. I loved my work but was ready to be a stay-at-home mom when the time came. In 2015, I started my own business called Presentation Matters, a gift wrapping service. Few people know that I worked at a flower shop in graduate school, where I honed my bow-making talents. (check it out: www.presentationmatterslv.com). Brian is an attorney who works too much.

-- In order to cope with my dad's death in the summer of 2011, I started running. It has taken me from 5Ks to half-marathons to the completion of an ultra marathon in the summer of 2014. Running is amazing; the freedom and perspective it provides is incredible. I talk about running and my awesome boot camp a lot; it's become one of my life's greatest joys. (check 'em out! www.lasvegasbootcamp.net)

Race PRs:
(I never claim to be fast, I just claim to enjoy it)
5K: 21:18 (Windy 5K, March 2017)
10K: 48:11 (ET Full Moon Midnight Race, August 2015. Second female to finish, 6th place overall)
Half: 1:39:42 (Cedar City Half Marathon, September 2015)
Full: 3:33:33 (Revel Mt. Charleston Marathon, May 2016. BOSTON QUALIFIER!)
51Km: 6:22 (ET Full Moon Ultra Marathon, August 2014)

-- Running inadvertently changed the way I look at food and now I adhere to a mostly plant-based diet (I say mostly because I'll occasionally add honey to my tea.) After years of yo-yo dieting, I'm down to my lowest weight AND feel fantastic. I've lost more than 100 pounds since the end of my pregnancy. The more I read, the more convinced I become that plant-based is the way to go. Running and eating healthy go hand-in-hand. It really is that easy.
