Smoothie Bonanza

I love a good smoothie.

It's the easiest and fastest way to get a ton of fruits and veggies in your diet, especially early in the day. I try to front-load my nutrition, making good breakfast and lunch choices, knowing that I'm more susceptible to bad eating later in the day. (Especially between the witching hours of 3pm and 6pm - why? Why? Anyone else suffer from this? I usually right the ship by dinner time, but seriously. I'm like a hippo at the zoo during feeding hour if I don't distract myself.)

Brian and I have a smoothie every morning. He gets a combo of spinach, OJ, half of a banana, and some kind of frozen fruit, like strawberries, mango, peach or blueberries. Occasionally I'll throw in some special ingredient like maca or chia seeds just to keep him on his toes. (I never tell him about the added fun, since he'll just wrinkle his nose).  He takes his smoothie to go, along with an iron pill and probiotic. Happy to report, it's working -- at his last blood draw, his iron levels are at a strong 14-15. YAY!

I tend to get a bit more creative with my smoothies, opting for a scoop of vegan protein powder with as many super foods as I can cram into the blender. I'm usually coming off of boot camp and/or a run, so I want to feed my body the best, most nutritious food I can find. My diet is functional at this point, using foods that have a purpose (recovery, muscle-building, etc). I'm a huge fan of natural anti-inflammatory foods, like fresh ginger and turmeric, though it is an acquired taste.  And despite some recent additions like the Pumpkin Pie Smoothie and the Ginger Peach, I was feeling a bit stale. My smoothie game could be better.

When the nice people at Terra's Kitchen sent me some new recipes, I thought it was worth sharing. Terra's Kitchen (www.terraskitchen.com) is a food delivery service that offers fresh ingredients, menu planning AND food prep. Honestly, does it get better? I'm sad that they are not in Las Vegas yet, since it sounds like an amazing resource. The one thing I hear the most is that people just don't have the time to prepare healthy options; Terra's Kitchen takes that excuse away.

As we wait for them to join us in the desert, however, here are some great new recipes to add to your smoothie collection. Enjoy!

    About Me

Think of this as the epilogue to Bridget Jones' story. Well, mostly. Bridget marries the handsome lawyer, starts a blog while on bedrest, and decides marathon running sounds like fun. Bridget goes through a divorce but keeps running. Hilarity ensues.
